Dead Insects

The Facts

I often come across dead insects in my office building on campus. They are lying on the floor in the corridor. They may stay there for a day or two until the cleaning staff finally takes them to their final resting place: a garbage bag.

The Theories

I'm not really sure why this is such a common occurrence. Do they come indoors and then can't find their way out until they die? If that were the case, wouldn't I see more living, panicking insects in the corridor? I do see some occasionally, but not as many as I see dead ones. Don't get me wrong; they don't happen every day, but once a month is a good estimate.

Or is there some insecticide in the corridor? Where is it? Is it healthy? Japanese people are blissfully oblivious to these things, but I'm not. Chemical insecticides can be harmful to all breathing creatures, not just the six-legged kind.

I have no idea.

The Metaphor
