Valentine's Day in Japan?
No, I'm not going to write a cliché and trite post like you can find by the dozens online, what would be the point?
I'm going to tell you how Valentine's Day takes place in my household in Japan.
Step one
Me, some date between March 15th and February 13th:
"Valentine's Day is just a horrible sexist holiday in Japan! What's wrong with this country?"
Step two
Me on the morning of February 14th to my wife:
"Oh, love, you bought me some chocolates, that's so nice and so kind of you! Thank you! I love you."
Me internally:
"Oh well, sexism has some good sides."
Step three
I pace myself eating the chocolates little by little, because they're delicious and precious and well, I'm too old to eat too many chocolates at once.
Step four
Me, usually, around February 15th or 16th:
"Where are all the chocolates, I only ate three?"
My wife and kids:
"Whoops, I'm afraid we ate the rest. Sorry."
Step five
My wife, some time before March 14th:
"No need to buy me some chocolates for White Day, we ate a lot recently and we need to save money."
Step six
My wife, on the morning of March 14th, pulling out a box (or two) of chocolates from a bag (that she bought):
"Oh, love, you bought me some chocolates, that's so nice and so kind of you! Thank you! I love you."
Full disclosure: she bought them for herself because she wants to choose them.
Step seven
Back to me eating one or two, and my wife and kids eating all the rest.
Rinse and repeat every year.
Happy Valentine's Day, I guess. I'll be back, I'll go see if there are some chocolates left.
